MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST TAKES TOP SPOT IN MACJC PRESEASON POLL:
For the second straight year the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Bulldogs are the SoutheastScout.com preseason favorites to win the MACJC. Anchored by a solid defense led by Jonathan Jenkins at DT and Lloyd Allen DE, the Bulldogs promise to field a team capable of going the distance. A host of others on defense plus the addition of QB Clayton Moore, transfer from Ole Miss, and a veteran offensive line help put all the pieces together for the Bulldogs. The defending MACJC Champion East Mississippi Lions start the season ranked #2. Gone is All American QB Randall Mackey as well as 26 others that signed scholarships with 4 year colleges so there are some holes to fill. A solid signing class as well as returning stars Quentin Dial DT, LB Jimmy Roby and safety Perrance Ward will lead the defense. If the Lions can answer some needs on offense look for them to be in the hunt once again. September 2, the Lions play at Gulf Coast which should be one to mark on the calendar. Jones Junior College starts out in the #3 position led DE Ryan Robinson. Look for Jon’al White DT to give people fits in the middle as well. Jones will be solid offensively as always. Pearl River Community College is #4 led by Otha Foster SS, Ledarren Cook DT and Daniel Hayden DE. Offensively look for the Wildcats to score plenty of points. Northwest CC #5, will have to find an answer at QB but did pick up transfers Darrell Davis DT 6’6 360 (Eastern Mich), and Jamal Mosley TE 6’4 255 (Oklahoma State). Look for the Rangers to have a chance to make some waves. Coahoma Community College #6, coming off the best year in school history has a very talented group returning. Coach Horton has taken this team where no one else has and with a veteran group returning look for more of the same. Copiah Lincoln Community College posts in at #7 and very well could be a sleeper this year. Terrence Coleman DE 6’2 240, Roland Dampier DT/DE 6’1 260, Bo Tillman DE/DT 6’6 270 and Jordan Hunt LB 6’0 218 lead a strong defense. Mississippi State transfer Montrell Conner RB, should give the Wolfpack a shot in the arm on the offensive side of the ball. First year coach Brian Anderson has put together an impressive recruiting class to make East Central someone to deal with in the south division. Khalid Wilson DT 6’1 300 and Gabe Loper CB will lead what should be an improved defense. Iowa State signee Dustin land QB/Ath 6’1 200 and Maryland signee Caleb Prozel 5’8 180 should give the offense some weapons. First year Coach Jon Williams takes over at Itawamba Community College as they project #9 in our preseason poll. Offensive tackle Houston Lantrip 6’3 295 and WR Justin Bean, a Kentucky commit should lead on offensive. Tevin Blanchard DB, should be the spark on defense. The Indians open with Hinds on September 2 in Fulton. Hinds Community College rolls in at #10. Look for the Eagles to make some improvements on offense with transfer QB Anthony Sheppard 6’1 180 at the helm. Sheppard, a Pahokee, Florida native had a good spring as did DE Leon Mackey 6’6 270 and LB Kanyatta Johnson 6’2 210. Mackey is one of the most sought after DL in the country this year. Coach Rickey Smither has put together what looks to be a solid foundation in Booneville this year. QB Clint Wilson is expected to have another solid year. On defense the Tigers return McAuther Leatherwood DT 6’4 325, Kyvori Bolden DT 6’2 310 and Chris Holland DE 6’3 300. Mississippi Delta polls in at #12. Oscar Golden DB, is as good as any in the league. Holmes Community College ranks in at #13. Dewayne Cherrington DT 6’3 350 will anchor the defensive front and Drew Dennis 6’2 225 should be a force at linebacker for the Bulldogs. Southwest Community College will feature All American CB J.D. Ratliff. Ratliff led the nation in picks in 2009.
